ECUADOR - 1998.
| In August 1998, a stalwart group of orchidists set off on an orchid exploring trip to Ecuador, to the Southeast Region near the town of Macas. Although Macas is only around 50 miles from Quito, it's in another world. Located along the Upano River, it is in the foothills of the Amazon, around 3000 feet in elevation. | ![]() |

Staying
at the Hotel de Oriente, the only hotel in town, with chickens running in
the hallways at 1 a.m., we knew we were in elegance. |
Macas was also at the base of the hemespheres tallest active volcano. Mt. Sangai . |

So our stalwart group was ready to begin exploring - Led by our friend and guide Dr. Eduardo Sanchez (holding the orchid in the picture on the right), along with his brother Teodoro (left above), and two local guides; Santiago Marin and Santiago Aravalo |

Where we were heading was across the Upano River for a three hour drive into the last cordillera before the Amazon |
